John Cartledge received his B.Sc. degree in mathematics and engineering in 1974 and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics in 1976 and 1979, respectively, from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

From 1979 to 1982, he was a Member of the Scientific Staff at Bell-Northern Research, Ottawa, where his work involved fiber-optic systems for the exchange access network and high-capacity digital radio systems. Since 1982, he has been a faculty member in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Queen's University.

In July 2002, he was appointed an inaugural recipient of a Queen's Research Chair in recognition of his research contributions to lightwave technology. He is presently the principal investigator for the Advanced Photonic Systems Test Laboratory within the National Microelectronics and Photonics Testing Collaboratory, a participant in the research network "Agile All-Photonic Networks", and a project leader with Photonics Research Ontario.

Dr. John Cartledge has spent one year on sabbatical leave (1988-1989) with the Lightwave Systems Technology Research Division of Bellcore, Red Bank, NJ and another year with the Optical Communications Department of Tele Denmark Research from 1995-1996.

He has served as a consultant and instructor in the area of lightwave technology to several organizations. His research interests include optical modulatiors, semiconductor lasers, fiber Bragg grating based components, wavelength converters and optical regenerators.
